Wisdom of today : the karma of torturing a bodhisattva.

Torturing a bodhisattva creates immense negative karma that leads to prolonged suffering in the lower realms and destroys vast amounts of accumulated positive merit. [1, 2, 3]
In Mahayana Buddhism, the weight of karma depends heavily on the intention of the doer and the spiritual qualities of the person being harmed. Because a bodhisattva dedicates their life to helping all living beings, harming them has severe consequences. [1, 2, 3]
Core Consequences in Buddhist Teachings
  • Rebirth in Hell: Texts state that harming or threatening someone on the bodhisattva path—especially one who upholds sacred teachings like the Lotus Sutra—leads directly to rebirth in the lowest and most painful hells (such as Avīci hell). The perpetrator may suffer there for many eons. [1, 2, 3]
  • Destruction of Merit: According to classic texts like the Lamrim teachings on karma, a single moment of intense anger or hatred directed at a bodhisattva can burn away and destroy the positive potential (good karma) a person built up over thousands of eons. [1]
  • Future Obstacles: Even after escaping the lower realms, the remaining karmic residue results in a life filled with disease, constant danger, short life spans, and extreme physical or mental suffering. [1, 2]
Why the Karma is So Heavy
  • The Power of the Object: A bodhisattva embodies bodhichitta, which is the pure, selfless wish to bring peace and enlightenment to every living being. Causing pain to someone with total compassion attacks the very source of goodness. [1]
  • The Poison of Hatred: Harming a peaceful and dedicated practitioner amplifies the actor's inner mental poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance, deepening their own cycle of suffering (samsara).
