In the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and Letters on Yoga (often associated with works such as Lights on Yoga), tears are seen as a physical expression stemming from either the deep soul (the psychic being) or the lower emotional/vital plane. Psychic Tears (Tears of Devotion and Joy) Source: These tears come from the inner soul-being that lies behind the heart. Meaning: They arise from a deep silence, peace, surrender, or an intense yearning for and love of the Divine. Approach: These are not sad tears of sorrow. Sri Aurobindo states that one should not suppress such psychic tears of joy or devotion, as they are a sign of a healthy spiritual opening. Vital Tears (Tears of Drama and Depression) Source: The vital (emotional and impulses) plane of man. Meaning: The vital part can sometimes revel in the drama of suffering, remorse, and lamentation ('luxuriating in tears'). Approach: Such disturbed, selfish, or sorrowful tears accompanied by depression or hopelessness must be discouraged. They disturb inner peace and are not considered helpful for yoga.
