The noted eighteenth-century sage, Rabbi Shimson Rafael Hirsh, summed it up:

The evil and challenges that come our way which God at times seems in our eyes to tolerate, actually serve to ennoble us and strenghten our moral fiber. The wrong which we must sometimes endure is part of that training course of suffering that will refine us- a training that God reserves primarily for those who by their choices and actions in life have demonstrated their capacity to learn and to grow from it. This is why suffering is not given to the wicked as it is given to the righteous.

It is thaught in the Zohar that people's good actions empower angels to receive from each other (Tikunei Zohar 39a). The angels, then, are better able to receive from one another, or even when people perform charity or perform acts of kindness for one another, or even when they sing sacred songs (Zohar, Vol.2, folio 18b). Simply listening to the difficulties empowers the angels if you are truly moved by the difficulties, and if you go through your own thoughts of repentence from that place, and if your heart is open. When one person learns the Torah from another, receives a favor or money or something else from another, the angels then are also empowered to receive from one another. By our positive thoughts and actions, we start of a whole cosmic cascade. It is the same as when we bless food, we are blessing the angelic forces that stand behind the food, therefore empowering the whole cosmic hierarchy. That is why it is so important to bless our food before the meal and to also give thanks after the meal.
