"Er is een weg, steil en doornig, bezet met gevaren van allerlei aard, maar toch een weg, en hij leidt naar het Hart van het Heelal. Ik kan u zeggen, hoe gij Hen vinden kunt, die u de geheime doorgang zullen tonen, welke alleen naar binnen leidt en achter de nieuweling voor altijd sluit. Er bestaat geen gevaar, dat onversaagde moed niet overwinnen kan. Er bestaat geen beproeving, waar vlekkeloze reinheid niet doorheen kan komen. Er is geen moeilijkheid, welke een krachtig denkvermogen niet te boven komen kan. Voor wie overwinnend omhoog gaan is er een beloning boven woorden : het vermogen om de mensheid te zegenen en te redden. Voor hen, die te kort schieten, zijn er andere levens waarin het slagen komen kan. - H.P.B.

Gedurende het laatste vierdedeel van elke honderd jaar is een poging gedaan door die Meesters waarvan ik gesproken heb, om de geestelijke vooruitgang van de mensheid op een tekenende en bepaalde wijze vooruit te helpen ... Indien de huidige poging, in de vorm van onze vereniging, beter slaagt dan haar voorgangers, dan zal zij bestaan als een georganiseerd, levend en gezond lichaam, wanneer de tijd komt voor de poging van de twintigste eeuw.

"Er is een vreemde wet in het Occultisme, die door duizende, jaren van ondervinding gesteund en bevestigd is. Ook heeft ze zich geopenbaard, in bijna ieder geval, gedurende de jaren dat de Theosofische Vereniging in wezen geweest is. Zodra iemand een gelofte aflegt als "proefleerling" vertonen zekere occulte uitwerkingen zich. Hiervan is de eerste dat alles, wat in de aard van de mens verborgen gelegen heeft, naar buiten komt : zijn gebreken, gewoonten, hoedanigheden of onderworpen begeerten, hetzij goed, slecht of onverschillig.

Indien iemand bijvoorbeeld zindelijk is, of streeft naar verheffing, zowel door avatisme of karmische erfelijkheid, is het zeker dat die ondeugden uit zullen breken, zelfs als hij tot nog toe erin geslaagd is, ze te verbergen en onderdrukken. Ze zullen onherroepelijk naar voren komen en hij zal hondermaal harder te kampen hebben dan tevoren, tot hij al die neigingen in zichzelf gedood heeft.

Aan de andere kant, indien hij goed, edelmoedig, kuis en matig is, of de een of andere deugd bezit, welke tot nog toe sluimerend en verborgen in hem was, zal ze even onherroepelijk als de andere naar buiten werken.

Zo zal een beschaafd persoon, die er een hekel aan heeft om voor een heilige door te gaan, en hierom een masker aanneemt, niet in staat zijn zijn ware aard te verbergen, hetzij laag of edel.

Dit is de onveranderlijke wet op het gebied van het occulte.

De werking ervan komt te meer uit, naarmate de begeerte van de kandidaat ernstiger en getrouwer is en hij dieper de werkelijkheid en de belangrijkheid van zijn gelofte gevoeld heeft."

During the last quarter of every hundred years an attempt has been made by those Masters of whom I have spoken to forward the spiritual progress of humanity in a marked and definite manner... If the present attempt, in the form of our Association, succeeds better than its predecessors, it will exist as an organized, living, and healthy body when the time comes for the twentieth-century attempt.

There is a strange law in occultism, which has been supported and confirmed by thousands of years of experience. It has also revealed itself, in almost every case, during the years that the Theosophical Society has existed. As soon as someone takes a vow as a "probationer," certain occult effects manifest themselves. The first of these is that everything that has lain hidden in man's nature comes to the fore: his defects, habits, qualities, or submissive desires, whether good, bad, or indifferent. If, for example, someone is clean, or strives for elevation, whether through avatism or karmic heredity, it is certain that these vices will break out, even if he has so far succeeded in concealing and suppressing them. They will inevitably come to the fore, and he will have to struggle a hundred times harder than before until he has killed all these tendencies within himself. On the other hand, if he is good, generous, chaste, and temperate If a person possesses any virtue that has hitherto been dormant and hidden within him, it will be brought out as irrevocably as the other. Thus, a cultured person who hates to be considered a saint and therefore assumes a mask will be unable to conceal his true nature, whether base or noble. This is the immutable law in the realm of the occult. Its effectiveness is all the more evident the more earnest and faithful the candidate's desire is, and the more deeply he has felt the reality and importance of his vow. The Secret Doctrine
