“De Afluisterstaat”: Op de eerste rij bij Glenn Greenwald.

Journalist Glenn Greenwald was vorige week (22/05/2014) te gast in de Amsterdamse Stadschouwburg voor de voorstelling van zijn jongste boek "De Afluisterstaat". Onze vliegende Liga reporter was ter plaatste. Je leest hier het relaas van een verhelderende voordracht.

Glenn Greenwald, ex-advocaat, ex-sterjournalist bij The Guardian, fervent politiek blogger en dezer dagen winnaar van de prestigieuze Pulitzerprijs voor zijn aandeel in het Edward Snowden verhaal. Wat weten we eigenlijk over de omstandigheden die Snowden en Greenwald samenbrachten? Wat weten we over de context binnen dewelke Snowden en zijn journalistieke wapenbroeder tot persona non grata werden verklaard door de Obama regering? Is Greenwald de man die de klassieke journalistiek de doodssteek heeft gegeven of heeft hij ze juist gered door zijn persoonlijke, betrokken stijl als geëngageerd politiek analist?

Al deze vragen worden beantwoord in zijn boek "No Place to Hide", dat de Nederlandse vertaling "De Afluisterstaat" meekreeg. Elke non-fictie auteur à la Greenwald wordt, zeker wanneer zijn leven en het leven van zijn hoofdpersonage op het spel staan omwille van hun boodschap, gedreven door een heilig vuur. Greenwald's heilig vuur wordt gevoed door verontwaardiging en woede over de vele absurde leugens die onmiddellijk na de Snowden-onthullingen werden verspreid door de N.S.A., de Amerikaanse regering en de mainstream media. Snowden was nu eens knettergek, een narcist, een onbetekenende techno-garnaal met slechts weinig invloed en dito inzicht in N.S.A.-materie. Dan weer was hij een Chinese en/of Russische spion en landverrader die nauwelijks capabel was om het grotere plaatje te zien. Greenwald is 's werelds bekendste Snowden-verdediger die bewezen heeft dat we te maken hebben met het tegendeel van al het bovenstaande. Snowden is in werkelijkheid een gesofistikeerde cyberspecialist, getraind door de C.I.A. en de N.S.A., die de N.S.A.-handelswijze niet langer kon verdragen omdat in werkelijkheid niets of niemand werd ontzien. Mensen en hun reputatie, individuen en hun recht op privacy en zelfs gehele landen zijn ''legitieme'' doelwitten voor N.S.A.-spionage.

Zo onthulden Greenwald en Snowden dat het totale gsm-verkeer van het mini-landje de Bahamas wordt gescreend door de N.S.A. Een West-Europese regering is onlangs gevallen na het dreigend wegvallen van steun voor de Afghanistan-invasie en het buitenlands beleid van de V.S.A. in het algemeen. Het recente schandaal dat de hoogste regionen van de Braziliaanse en Duitse politieke op stelten zette na nieuws van N.S.A. taps ligt nog vers in ons geheugen. De N.S.A.-uitwassen zijn legio.

Snowden's beslissing om na zijn vlucht zélf naar de pers te stappen en zijn besef dat geëngageerde journalisten, bekend om hun integriteit en kennis van N.S.A.-zaken, beter geplaatst zijn om de schandalen wereldkundig te maken strekken hem tot eer. Snowden's expliciete vraag om uiterst voorzichtig en selectief om te gaan met het gelekte explosieve materiaal bewijst volgens Greenwald nog maar eens dat we te maken hebben met een onbaatzuchtige idealist van het zuiverste water.

De enige kritiek die Greenwald wél als ernstig aanvaard komt zowaar uit ''linkse" hoek. In tegenstelling tot wat Greenwald verdedigt, stellen zij nl. dat het druppelsgewijs publiceren van de documenten juist niet de aangewezen strategie is om de N.S.A. aan te pakken. Deze critici zien echter een aantal dingen over het hoofd. Elke inlichtingendienst is verondersteld aan ''normale'' datavergaring te doen en toezicht op gevoelig materiaal te houden. Het vrijgeven van data die onschuldige burgers en nuttige veiligheidsprogramma's schade zouden kunnen berokkenen is echter uit den boze. Het selectief en gewetensvol omgaan met vergaarde data ingeval van reële dreigingen voor de samenleving is gerechtvaardigd. Het systematisch in kaart brengen van groepen van mensen, individuen en zelfs ganse landen, enkel en alleen omdat de N.S.A. dit zélf belangrijk vindt, is echter een directe ondermijning van onze democratische waarden - iets waar sinistere alfabetdiensten à la C.I.A., N.S.A. en anderen een patent op lijken te hebben.

Snowden heeft ons eraan herinnerd hoe belangrijk onze digitale privacy is en waarom de N.S.A. en hun politieke beschermheer Obama zo geobsedeerd zijn door het straffeloos bespioneren van de hele wereld. Snowden heeft bewezen dat de continu verkondigde Big Brother-mantra dat zegt dat ''Enkel zij die iets te verbergen hebben en een gevaar zijn voor onze collectieve veiligheid digitaal gevolgd worden" een leugen is. Het perverse van een dergelijke mentaliteit is dat dit ook wil zeggen dat zij die wél bewust omgaan met het vrijgeven van persoonlijke data en zeer bewust omgaan met het recht op privacy door de N.S.A. worden bekeken als potentiële misdadigers. Zowel Snowden als Greenwald zijn buitenbeentjes omdat ze doen waar we allemaal stiekem van dromen: onbaatzuchtig nobele idealen verdedigen, zelfs wanneer we hiervoor onze toekomst, onze fysieke veiligheid moeten opofferen en fabelachtige rijkdommen bewust mislopen. Ook Greenwald heeft, naar eigen zeggen, als journalist geleerd uit deze ervaring. Het bespreken en wereldkundig maken van het zoveelste N.S.A.verhaal is nl. één ding, het herkennen en erkennen van een gevaarlijke rode lijn doorheen al deze schandalen is iets anders.

Greenwald schreef nl. al een hele tijd over de N.S.A. en hun antidemocratische fratsen. Het is echter pas na zijn ontmoeting met de 29-jarige Snowden en zijn expertise als N.S.A.-insider die hem bewust hebben gemaakt van het feit dat hij als journalist door de bomen het bos niet meer zag. Snowden heeft Greenwald geleerd dat elk individueel N.S.A.-dossier, dat op zich al aantoont hoe nefast deze Big Brother is voor de democratie, mensenrechten en onze privacy, deel uitmaakt van een groter geheel. Het is de immense omvang van de N.S.A.-data en het institutionele mandaat van de N.S.A. die alles zo sinister maken. Snowden heeft bewezen dat de N.S.A. iedereen vogelvrij kan verklaren zonder enige controle of inperking van hun bevoegdheden want ''Wat niet weet, niet deert'', nietwaar? De Snowden-files en Greenwald hebben ervoor gezorgd dat het ''wat niet weet gedeelte'' iets minder omvangrijk is geworden wat ons bewustzijn over onze privacy enkel ten goede kan komen. Greenwald lacht, terecht, zijn favoriete N.S.A.- en/of Obamaleugen weg die zegt dat Snowden slechts een techno-dombo en clown zou zijn die uit is op aandacht van de wereldpers.

Wat handig wordt verzwegen is dat Snowden's acties een gevoelige N.S.A.-snaar hebben beroerd in de zin dat mensen, overheden en instanties altijd hun gedrag aanpassen wanneer ze weten dat ze geobserveerd worden. Dit staat in schril contrast met onze elementaire vrijheden als burgers van een democratische samenleving. ''De Afluisterstaat'' wil ons denken en handelen controleren zonder zelf gecontroleerd te worden door diegenen die ze verondersteld zijn te dienen. Niets in het handelen van Edward Snowden is willekeurig of toevallig gekozen. Hij heeft moedwillig dit debat aangezwengeld, ervoor wakend niet herleid te worden tot zijn persoonlijke relaties, zijn persoonlijke toekomst of zijn verleden. Zijn bescheidenheid, zijn keuze om zijn bevindingen en ontdekkingen niet ten gelde te maken en zijn semi-vrijwillige ballingschap zijn niet echt kenmerken van een samenzweerderige clown en narcist die zijn regering en zijn vroegere werkgever van hem proberen te maken.

Het ironische aan heel deze zaak is dat dit zoveel meer is geworden dan een simplistisch David versus Goliath verhaal. Snowden's onthullingen hebben als onbedoeld bijverschijnsel dat Obama, het vriendelijke gezicht van een nieuw Amerikaans beleid, door de mand is gevallen omdat juist hij bijzonder gesteld is op het levenslang opsluiten van de uit de biecht klappende Snowden.

Greenwald bespreekt in zijn boek uitvoerig dat we, ondanks al de geheime aanvallen op burgers van een oppermachtig instituut zoals de N.S.A. veel moed kunnen putten uit concrete veranderingen die Snowden en anderen in gang hebben gezet. De Duitse en Braziliaanse regeringen zijn, wijzer geworden door de laatste afluisterschandalen, bezig belangrijke veranderingen door te voeren die hun burgers zullen beschermen tegen de N.S.A. Zelfs het Amerikaanse Congress is zich aan het beraden over nieuwe wetten in deze context.

Op kleinere schaal zien we dat de mensen zich onderling beginnen te organiseren om hun privacy en andere mensenrechten beter te kunnen beschermen. Het zijn vooral deze privacy-bewuste gemeenschappen die nieuwe technologieën en cyberprogramma's ontwikkelen en verspreiden om een concrete, alledaagse aanwezigheid op het net of telefoonverkeer een stuk veiliger te maken.
De webbrowser TOR, veilige(r) chat- en mailprogramma's zoals Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) enSilent Circle worden als alternatieven voor een meer bewuste omgang met onze privacy steeds populairder.

En Snowden zélf? Hoe is het eigenlijk met hem gesteld nu hij, door omstandigheden, Rusland's bekendste asielzoeker geworden is? Edward Snowden, zo verzekert Greenwald ons, is de meest gelukkige en meest tevreden mens op aarde omdat hij, ondanks alle zelfopofferingen die hij nog steeds moet brengen, elke nacht kan gaan slapen met een gerust gemoed. Ver weg van familie en vrienden, in een land dat hem slechts oogluikend tolereert, weet hij immers dat zijn onthullingen de wereld iets vrijer en veiliger zullen maken.

Mijmeringen ...

Wat doe je als je niet tussen 2, maar tussen schijnbaar vele vuren staat? In mijn omgeving hebben veel mensen N-VA gestemd, ook in mijn familie. Vrienden van vroeger kozen ook, net als vele anderen voor de partij van de Grote Leider. Ik heb mijn mening, en zij die van hen. Toch moeten we zien overeen te komen. Een moeilijke oefening, maar het is dat of het einde van de vriendschap. Ik denk aan de aanpak van Voltaire vroeger, die zijn tegenstanders nooit het recht zou hebben ontnomen om er een andere mening op na te houden. Verder blijft mijn grootste voorbeeld Aurobindo. Ik heb gelijkenissen in mijn leven gehad, ervaringen die hij ook heeft meegemaakt. Het is een verre vriend vanop afstand - overleden, maar nog zo dichtbij. Ooit trek ik me ergens terug om in stilte verder te werken voor de vooruitgang van de planeet, ver weg van alle politieke en / of religieuze twisten., waar ik niet bepaald gelukkiger van wordt. Vanbinnen zijn we toch allemaal hetzelfde, weinigen schijnen dat te snappen.

Bij het uitbreken van de financiële crisis schreef een vriend al een gedicht naar mij. We zagen dit toen allemaal aankomen. Erover praten stond toen gelijk aan knettergek verklaard worden, en uitgelachen te worden. Wat doe je eraan, je kan niemand dwingen te luisteren .... Ik bleef met periodes dat mijn gezondheid het toeliet voornamelijk op vrijwillige basis mijn steentje bijdragen tot de samenleving. Afluisterschandalen vermoeden stond toen gelijk aan paranoïde verklaard worden. Toen kwam Edward Snowden, sommige dingen bleken nog erger te zijn dan bepaalde inzichten in de werkelijkheid die ons team eerderhad. Mensen die actief hun best doen, en al amper er iets voor terugverwachten, verpauperen nu nog meer in eigen stad sinds de verkiezingen. Geld, macht, status uiterlijk vertoon - het blijft winnen in dit Kali Yuga. Schijnbaar winnen - op werelds vlak, staat haaks op spiritueel succes.

Mijmeringen over gele zondag, het nieuwe zwart;

Ik wens alle overwinnaars van de verkiezingen te feliciteren met hun resultaat: opvallend triomf voor N-VA, Open Vld deed het goed, Groen! is overal gestegen, Sp.a hield redelijk stand, en PVDA+ en Vlaams Belang zijn afgestraft. De kiezers van de meest extreme partijen van het land bevinden zich nu elders en schuiven op naar rechts, waardoor gewoon rechts al een beetje extreem-rechts wordt, en dat is bedenkelijk. Front National is de grote winnaar in Frankrijk. Er is een tendens bezig in Europa en in Vlaanderen die me zorgen baart. Bruno De Wever, broer van Bart De Wever, die zelf aangaf uit een extreem-rechts milieu te komen (ik ook gedeeltelijk, mijn oom was gemeenteraadslid voor het Vlaams Belang en maakte me in mijn onwetendheid ooit lid van de partij, waar ik al vlug afstand van nam) schreef een boek over de onderwerpen waar hij en de zijnen goed over op de hoogte zijn:

Wie wil er nu onder een Nieuwe Orde leven? De geschiedenis herhaalt zich altijd, maar wel onder een andere vorm. Het zijn barre tijden waarbij de zwaksten eerst de prijs zullen betalen. Sociaal-darwinisme, de wet van de sterkste. Hitler zelf zou er nog een portie eugenetica bijdoen, en het feest is compleet, een feest in mineur, wel te verstaan.

Men moet oppassen voor propaganda in de politiek, zeker vanuit extreem-rechtse kringen:

Ik heb links gestemd, en laat me niet doen. Ik neem me zelfs voor om De leeuw van Vlaanderen te bekijken om de tegenpartij beter te begrijpen, naar het boek van Hendrik Conscience en met een verfilming van Hugo Claus. Hopelijk kan ik zo het ongrijpbare toch een beetje vatten.

Het was geen witte zondag, maar een gele, en geel is het nieuwe zwart. Ik heb N-VA kiezers onder vrienden en familie, alleen beseffen deze mensen niet hoe demagogie en propaganda werkt in de politiek en in de geschiedenis. Jammer, Wir Haben Es Nicht Gewusst!!!

Werk, werk, werk

Werk is het belangrijkste thema in deze laatste week voor de verkiezingen. Terecht. Minder goed nieuws zijn de valse beloftes die politici maken en de foute cijfers waarmee ze uitpakken.

Ik mocht de afgelopen weken meermaals in debat treden met politici die opkomen voor de moeder aller verkiezingen. Het ging vaak over werk. In die debatten, maar ook in hun programma’s is er één woord dat al deze partijen verbindt, van Sp.a tot N-VA: activeren. Het enige verschil is dat rechtse partijen zoals Open Vld, CD&V en vooral N-VA voor die activering de focus leggen op de eigen verantwoordelijkheid van de werkloze, terwijl de andere partijen ook naar de rol van politiek wijzen.

Is een goed cv genoeg?

“Met een goed cv vind je hoe dan ook werk”, zegt Bart De Wever in Het Laatste Nieuws (20/05). Is dat wel zo? In april 2014 ontving de VDAB 21.043 vacatures voor 224.790 niet-werkende werkzoekenden. In Brussel zijn er 32 kandidaten per vacature. Voor wie geen goed cv heeft, in Brussel geldt dat voor de grote meerderheid van de werklozen, gaat het om 112 laaggeschoolde kandidaten per vacature. Activeren heeft weinig zin als er geen banen zijn. En dan hebben we het nog niet over het soort banen. 1/3de van de jongeren die een job hebben, werkt deeltijds en steeds meer mensen komen terecht in interimjobs en flexi-jobs gaande van eendagjobs tot, voor wie wat meer geluk heeft, een job voor de week.

Open Vld, CD&V en Sp.a beloven duizenden nieuwe jobs. “Misleiding op hoger niveau”, was de reactie van econoom Paul De Grauwe op deze beloftes. N-VA mocht niet ontbreken, dus beloofde Bart De Wever in Terzake (21/05) 135.000 jobs. André Decoster van KUL die voor de VRT, De Tijd en De Standaard de partijprogramma’s narekende liet via twitter weten: “Rekening14 vermeldt NERGENS 135.000 jobs N-VA”. De woordvoerder van N-VA gaf de dag nadien toe dat De Wever “Het verkeerde lijntje in de tabel las”. Zo ernstig wordt dus het thema werk genomen.

Bovendien zijn er nergens in Europa zo weinig migranten actief op de arbeidsmarkt dan in België. De oorzaak hiervoor is al tientallen keren bewezen in internationale onderzoeken en getoond in reportages van de VRT: racisme en discriminatie op de arbeidsmarkt. 22% van de hooggeschoolde migrantenjongeren is werkloos, terwijl bij autochtone jongeren maar 6% werkloos is. Harde maatregelen tegen discriminatie op de arbeidsmarkt blijven dode letter en van Liesbeth Homans mogen we zelfs het woord racisme niet meer laten vallen. Begrijpelijk voor een partij die VB-kiezers en -overlopers wil binnenhalen.

Ik vraag mij ook af waarom de politieke partijen tot nu hebben gewacht met het creëren van die jobs aangezien er nu al een zwaar tekort is. CD&V en Sp.a zitten in de federale en Vlaamse regering. Sp.a leverde zelfs de federale minister van Werk. Open Vld zit in de federale regering. N-VA maakt deel uit van de Vlaamse Regering en zit af te geven op werklozen, maar wie is er bevoegd voor werk in Vlaanderen? Jawel, Philippe Muyters van N-VA.

Veel visie is er dus niet bij deze politieke partijen. De vraag blijft hoe we meer mensen aan het werk kunnen krijgen en waarop we moeten focussen. Gelukkig ben ik geen politicus dus moet ik geen valse beloftes maken. Ik ben kritisch over het discours rond activering en eigen verantwoordelijkheid, maar ik ben niet tegen.

Ik ben niet tegen activering omdat ik denk dat werk belangrijk is om ons te ontplooien maar dan moet er wel voldoende kwalitatief werk zijn en werk dat we graag doen. Iets wat steeds minder mensen kunnen zeggen vandaag.

Eigen verantwoordelijkheid

Ik ben voor eigen verantwoordelijkheid. Aan paternalisme dat mensen afhankelijk maakt van structuren hebben we niets. Ik geloof dat elk van ons een eigen verantwoordelijkheid heeft en zijn of haar leven in eigen handen wil nemen. Het is wel zo dat niet iedereen evenveel verantwoordelijkheid kan dragen. Iemand die zijn middelbaar onderwijs niet heeft kunnen afmaken en moet schipperen tussen interimjobs en werkloosheidsuitkering kan niet evenveel verantwoordelijkheid dragen als een hooggeschoolde met een goed betaalde baan.

Daarom het is essentieel dat we twee dingen doen. Ten eerste moeten we ervoor zorgen dat we mensen die in een kwetsbare positie zitten echte kansen bieden, ondersteunen en sterker maken zodat ze meer verantwoordelijkheid kunnen dragen, voor zichzelf en de rest van de samenleving. Door af te geven op werklozen, de werkloosheidsuitkeringen lager te maken of ze te beperken in de tijd, gaan we wie het moeilijk heeft niet vooruit helpen. Integendeel we straffen hen, hun situatie zal verslechteren en dit is slecht nieuws voor hen, maar ook voor ons.

Ten tweede kunnen we de huidige problemen allen aanpakken als er een uitbreiding komt van de verantwoordelijkheid. Het middenveld dat vandaag zo goed als volledig naar de pijpen van de beleidsmakers danst moet zijn verantwoordelijkheid opnemen door ten dienste te staan van de burgers. Het middenveld moet kiezen voor een emancipatorische werking die de situatie van de burgers verandert en verbetert. Hetzelfde geldt voor de werkgevers. Waarom spreken we nooit over de verantwoordelijkheid van de werkgevers? Nochtans kunnen ze mee helpen om een verschil te maken door op een rechtvaardige manier belastingen te betalen, door nultolerantie in te voeren voor racisme en discriminatie op de arbeidsmarkt en door te kiezen voor sociale en ecologische investeringen. Politici die o zo graag constant over eigen verantwoordelijkheid van de burger praten, mogen gerust het goede voorbeeld geven en zelf ook hun verantwoordelijkheid opnemen. Dit kunnen ze doen door te kiezen voor zinvolle investeringen die aansluiten bij de noden en behoeften van de burgers.

Een overheid die investeert

Ik maak het wat concreter. De helft van de Brusselaars heeft recht op sociale huisvesting terwijl maar 8% van de woningen in het Brussels Gewest sociale woningen zijn. De overheid kan ervoor kiezen om in sociale huisvesting te investeren door meer sociale woningen bij te bouwen. Maar eerst moeten we de huidige sociale woningen renoveren en de 30.000 leegstaande panden aanpakken. De renovaties kunnen werk creëren voor de 80.000 laaggeschoolde werklozen in Brussel. Bovendien bieden de renovaties voor een deel van diezelfde groep mensen het perspectief om in die huizen te gaan wonen.

Eén op drie van de Brusselaars is jonger dan 25 jaar en deze stad blijft groeien en verjongen. Er is een zwaar tekort aan kinderopvang en aan scholen. Hier kan de overheid ervoor kiezen om nieuwe creches en scholen te bouwen. Daarvoor hoeven we geen Poolse of Bulgaarse arbeiders naar hier te halen, maar moeten Brusselaars worden ingeschakeld. Bovendien wordt er zo ook werk gecreëerd voor al die mensen die tewerkgesteld worden als leerkrachten, onderhoudspersoneel, poetswerk enz. Investeren in het onderwijs is in dit geval niet alleen investeren in werk, maar ook investeren in een betere toekomst, want goed onderwijs betekent minder laaggeschoolden en meer kansen voor de Brusselse jeugd.

Hiervoor zijn er politici nodig met een aanpak voor nu en een visie voor morgen. Aan u de keuze zondag.

Towards unity?

Vasudhaiva kudumbakam, said the ancient Indians: the world is one family.

The ideal of human unity, which was already present at the dawn of civilisation, has never appeared so close to realisation, but paradoxically the closer we come to it, the more it seems to elude us. It is as if at the onset of the 21st century the need for human unity has never been so great, and yet quite often this very unity, seen as inevitable, is perceived as somewhat threatening.

World in crisis

We speak of mondialisation, of globalisation, and in the same breath we deplore the dangers of uniformity.. We speak of democracy as a universal ideal and of the progress of all nations towards it as irreversible, and yet at the same time this democratic model is perceived as a system imposed by some nations on others. We are facing environmental problems which threaten the very survival of our planet. We are aware of 'global warming' and a decrease in the finite resources of the planet, and we know that in order to tackle these common problems the individual nation-state is not an adequate institution anymore. But the very concept of a supra-national body is perceived as a possible infringement on the sovereignty of the nation-state, won in numerous cases after many decades - or longer - of struggle and pain.

Erasure of cultures

We claim that today's world is a global village, because technological progress has made our earth very small, and news can instantly reach every inhabitant of the earth through the highroad of information. But there is the fear that this global village culture may erase the diverse cultures of the earth; indeed it is argued that there is already an immense drive towards uniformity of life habits and uniformity of knowledge.

Economic front

On the economic front, the much-talked-about liberalisation process is seen by many as an attempt to impose everywhere a model only suited to some countries, and to spread everywhere a culture of consumerism. A computer for everyone and bread for only one quarter of the world population; is this the goal towards which we are advancing?

Science

In the 19th century, intellectuals saw the progress of science as the great factor which would lead to the unification of mankind, since science was a thing common to all men in its conclusions and was international in its very nature; but we know now that science can be misused, and is being misused, to discover more and more means of destruction. We have lost faith in science as a panacea for all evils, but what is there to replace it?

Biggest obstacle

We know that egoism is the biggest obstacle to a life of harmony and peace on earth, but after so many centuries of civilisation no amount of religious preaching or moral teaching has been able to convince the ego to forego its claims, as to speak to him of fraternity is to speak to him of something fundamentally contrary to his nature.

Need for real unity

Therefore it appears that although we are moving somewhat reluctantly towards a kind of unification, this is not a process likely to solve the many acute problems of the earth, nor will the envisaged unity answer the deeper needs and aspirations of the human being. In fact, we have begun to understand that if we want to preserve the freedom for man to develop and grow in all liberty, this unity cannot be built through mechanical means. It cannot be achieved as long as man does not recognise a real unity between man and man; it cannot be arrived at through social and mechanical devices; and we have even started to realise that if its aim is not to bring about a fairer, brighter and nobler life for all mankind, this unity is hardly desirable.

Man will be surpassed

It becomes therefore urgent to understand what this unity is towards which we feel pushed in spite of ourselves. Man is a transitional being, said Sri Aurobindo shortly after the first World War, evolution continues and man will be surpassed. Not only did Sri Aurobindo foresee the next step in the evolution of man, but he told us how to participate in it: instead of remaining a passive spectator in a painful and incomprehensible process, we could consciously collaborate in our own evolution and break free of our seemingly inextricable bonds.

Using inner means

But for this, we have to reverse the process, said Sri Aurobindo, and instead of using external means, we have to turn inward, because without a change in man's nature no real changes in the external circumstances are likely to take place. The only way we can move towards unity is to progressively realise that there is a secret Spirit, a divine Reality in which we are all one - not only realise it mentally but discover it in ourselves and live this knowledge. The secret of unity is within, said Sri Aurobindo; the secret of brotherhood is within. There is no unity except by the soul, there is no real brotherhood except in the soul and by the soul. Only when we live from the soul and not from the ego will a real unity reign on earth.

Connecting with the new consciousness

This 'spiritual age of humanity' then will represent a transformation in the nature of man as momentous as the appearance of the thinking mind on earth. In the same way as for millennia the mind was the centre of our life, so, in the new age opening for humanity, or 'supra-mental' age, the soul will become the centre of all life and activities. A new stage in the evolution of man has already begun; a new consciousness, higher than the mind, a truth-consciousness, as Sri Aurobindo said, in which the dualities, hesitations and limitations of the mind and the greed and blindness of the ego will no longer exist, has already started to appear, and all the upheavals and convulsions that are at present so painfully tearing our earth are the outward signs of this evolutionary crisis. This new consciousness is already at work in the atmosphere of the earth: we can connect with it, we can call it in ourselves, we can use it to transform our entire nature and consequently the world in which we live.

It is in this wide and far-reaching sense that Auroville is dedicated to human unity. All are invited.

Introduction to Alternative Cancer Treatments – Chapter 13 – Cancer Drugs

I am absolutely stunned when I review cancer research reports on the internet that are made public. When a new natural nutrient is found that is proven to kill cancer cells or stop the spread of cancer, do they ask whether this nutrient can be used in a natural treatment for cancer? Of course not. The first question that is asked is this: “how can we mutate and synthesize this nutrient, patent it, and make it into a profitable drug?”

Ponder that last paragraph carefully because it is the heart and soul of modern medicine. Find a natural substance that cures something, bury this fact, then fabricate, synthesize, and mutate the key natural substance, then patent the mutation, and make huge profits. That is why there is “no scientific evidence” for alternative treatments, no one is looking because they cannot be patented and thus are not profitable enough.

As an example, consider this quote:

The first development in this research using chemically altered DIM [diindolylmethane, a natural compound derived from certain vegetables] from broccoli came when the growth of breast cancer cells was inhibited in laboratory studies. Subsequent research showed these compounds also inhibited growth of pancreatic, colon, bladder and ovarian cancer cells in culture, Safe said. Limited trials on lab mice and rats have produced the similar results, he noted.

Safe said the research began by considering compounds that protect a person from developing cancer. After a stream of articles from other researchers extolling the scientific evidence that cruciferous vegetables prevent cancer, Safe and his team wondered whether the similar compounds could be developed for treatment of cancer. They looked at the mechanism – how the compounds block cancer cell growth – and found that they target PPAR gamma, a protein that is highly active in fat cells. This same PPAR gamma is over-expressed in many tumors and tumor cells and is a potential target for new drugs, he said. Safe’s lab chemically modified “natural” DIM to give a series of compounds that target the PPAR gamma and stop the growth of cancer.

Wait a minute – why “modify” a natural substance that works perfectly well? Why not research how this natural substance can be used in a natural treatment for cancer? The answer is that it is not profitable enough.

If you are accounting savvy, consider this: because of patents, Big Pharma can charge any price they want to for a drug. This means that when they calculate the price of a drug they can first take into account how much it will cost them to bribe Congressmen, bribe public officials, control the media, control the AMA, control the ACS, pay “gifts” to individual doctors, pay lawsuits, etc. In other words, they can first calculate their expected costs for these things, then come up with a price for their drugs. They cannot go out of business because they can adjust their prices to pay for anything they want.

Do you want to know the mark-up of some common drugs? The Commerce Department did and came up with some interesting numbers:

Big Pharma claims that these prices are necessary for them to continue with their expensive research. Not so. Most of their mark-up is designed to cover other costs, such as lobbyists and advertising.

Now let’s go back and talk about the Budwig cancer diet, which used two Nobel Prize discoveries in its development. It seems that modern medicine, with their billions of dollars of “research” money has not yet found a way to safely and inexpensively use these two Nobel Prize discoveries of the 1930s. But Johanna Budwig, by herself, was able to cure cancer with the two discoveries. Here is another question: “Do you think that the pharmaceutical industry and medical community are willing to forgo many billions of dollars of annual profits by looking for a safe and inexpensive way to use these discoveries?”

The FDA and “Scientific Evidence”

As mentioned previously, Congress has designed the FDA to be the goon squad for Big Pharma. Whatever Big Pharma wants, Big Pharma gets.

This is not to say that all of the employees of the FDA are people of low integrity. I am sure many of the low-level FDA employees are people of high integrity and are truly people oriented. Such people have no future at the FDA.

This is because our two “festering in corruption” political parties make sure that whoever is in the White House does not accidentally appoint someone with a moral conscience to head the FDA. In other words, in order to be a top person in the FDA, especially those involved with profitable drugs, you must be willing to be loyal to Big Pharma.

Let us consider for a moment, the approval of the chemotherapy drug Iressa. I am quoting from the FDA web site:

Accelerated approval is a program the FDA developed to make new drug products available for life threatening diseases when they appeared to provide a benefit over available therapy (which could mean there was no existing effective treatment). Under this program, Iressa is approved on the basis of early clinical study evidence (such as tumor shrinkage) suggesting that the drug is reasonably likely to have a valuable effect on survival or symptoms. The approval is granted on the condition that the manufacturer must continue testing to demonstrate that the drug indeed provides therapeutic benefit [i.e. tumor shrinkage] to the patient. If it does not, the FDA can withdraw the product from the market more easily than usual.

How many clinical trials were performed with Iressa and what did they show? The study on which FDA based it approval included 216 patients 139 of whom had failed treatment with two other chemotherapy treatments. In this trial, approximately 10% of patients responded to Iressa with a decrease in tumor size.

The sponsor also presented to FDA the results of two large (about 1000 patients each) clinical studies with Iressa as initial therapy for lung cancer. In these studies all patients received, standard combination chemotherapy and were randomly given, in addition, either Iressa or a placebo. In these studies there was no effect of Iressa on survival [versus the placebo], time to further growth of cancer, or on tumor size. (underscore added)

In other words, in two large studies this drug demonstrated absolutely no increase in survival of cancer patients. It was approved because in a trial of only 216 patients, only 10% of the patients had a decrease in tumor size (which is a symptom of cancer).

Note that this product was not approved in a study that compared the “total life” of a person using Iressa to the “total life” of someone who refused all treatments, or to someone on a top alternative cancer treatment. It was compared to treating the symptoms of cancer compared to another concoction of drugs.

Iressa was approved by the FDA.

Dr. Kelley had 33,000 patients with a 93% cure rate!! How come the FDA has not approved his treatment? Dr. Gonzalez is duplicating part of Kelley’s treatment, but the New York state medical society has forbidden Dr. Gonzalez to release the results of his study until his study is “done.” Of course, no one knows when his study will be done.

Now lets do the math. 216 patients, 10% had lower tumor size (compared to a different combination of chemotherapy drugs). 33,000 patients, a 93% CURE RATE. The FDA approved Iressa and the Cancer Industry threw Kelley in jail and kicked him out of the country. What is wrong with this picture?

Because the FDA requires a study controlled by Big Pharma in order to approve a drug, why doesn’t one of the pharmaceutical companies do an honest study using Dr. Kelley’s full treatment on newly diagnosed cancer patients, and submit the results (which would be at least a 93% cure rate) to the FDA? Take a guess.

This is critical to understand, Big Pharma will not submit a drug to the FDA unless it is very, very profitable. The next thing to understand is that the FDA will not approve any drug, or other substance, unless it is studied under the control of Big Pharma.

Let’s logically combine the above statements into one statement: The FDA will never consider, thus will never approve, any substance unless it is very, very profitable to Big Pharma.

In fact, that is exactly the way it is. Big Pharma first decides what products can be considered by the FDA, and then it submits only those products. In essence, the FDA has no control (by its own choice) over what substances are considered for approval. Only Big Pharma is allowed to decide what is considered for approval.

Let’s take this a step further. The FDA does not consider that there is any “scientific evidence” for a treatment unless they have approved it!! In other words, there is no possible way that there can be any “scientific evidence” (according to the government’s definition) unless a drug is very, very profitable to Big Pharma. Only things submitted to the FDA by Big Pharma can be considered to have “scientific evidence.”

Do you see what is going on here? The reason there is no official “scientific evidence” for alternative cancer treatments is that they are not highly profitable to Big Pharma. It is impossible, by law, for a substance to be considered to have “scientific evidence,” unless Big Pharma submits it to the FDA, and they will only submit things that are very, very profitable to them.

Thus, the many thousands of studies of natural substances that have cured or treated cancer, are not “scientific evidence,” and they are ignored by our government, because they were not done under the control of Big Pharma. Quite a racket!! Big Pharma makes the tobacco industry look like amateurs!!

Thus, when quackwatch, the ACS, the NCI, WebMD, etc. claim that there is “no scientific evidence” for alternative treatments, it is nothing but a lie and a smoke screen, fabricated by Congress and its stepchild the FDA.

I can guarantee the reader, in all soberness, that there are more than 150 alternative cancer treatments that are far more effective than ANY and ALL orthodox treatments for cancer currently in use. All of these treatments have been suppressed, and many of them have been destroyed, by orthodox medicine. Since all “scientific evidence” must come from big corporations, what is the reputation of big corporations for doing medical studies?

Well, do you remember the 1,500 studies, done over a period of 42 years, that were funded by the Council for Tobacco Research – U.S.A? These “studies” couldn’t find a relationship between tobacco and lung cancer!!

Do you remember the 74 studies that were funded by Big Pharma to “study” whether aspartame causes any health problems? These “studies” couldn’t find anything wrong with aspartame.

Big Pharma studies on radiation, chemotherapy, etc. are just as bogus because they only compare one toxic sludge to another toxic sludge, even when studying length of life. However, these same types of studies are also used to study treating the SYMPTOMS of cancer.

In short, if a study is funded or controlled (e.g. a government funded study) by Big Pharma, or any other giant corporation, it is a worthless, bogus, misleading, etc. study.

Yet, that is the ONLY type of study the FDA will accept and it is the ONLY type of study that will lead to the designation of “scientific evidence”!!

The thousands of honest studies, which are not in any way controlled by Big Pharma, are not eligible for the designation of “scientific evidence” because they do not lead to Big Profits for Big Pharma. Likewise, the cure rates of alternative doctors, such as Kelley and Binzel, are not eligible for the designation of “scientific evidence,” instead the people involved with these studies are persecuted.

It is apparent that “scientific evidence” has absolutely nothing to do with “scientific truth.”

When a vendor of natural substances funds a study to determine the effectiveness of their product, orthodox medicine ignores this study because they consider there is a “conflict of interest.” On the other hand, when Big Pharma funds a study to make their toxic sludges look useful, the FDA cannot approve the study fast enough!! Not only does Big Pharma have a huge conflict of interest, any scientist that does a study for them knows what results they must come up with in advance.

Even though Dr. Kelley had a verified cure rate of 93% on 33,000 patients, the American Cancer Society describes his treatment this way:

There is no scientific evidence that metabolic therapy is effective in treating cancer or any other disease. Some aspects of metabolic therapy may be harmful.

The FDA and cancer industry have invented many terms to describe alternative cancer treatments which imply they are useless, when in fact these terms mean nothing more than they are not profitable to Big Pharma. Regardless of how much scientific research has been done on these natural substances, the FDA will use terms like: “unproven therapy,” “unproven treatment,” “unproven methods,” and many others. “Unproven” means “unprofitable to Big Pharma.”

The terminology tricks of the FDA are absolutely critical to Big Pharma’s Big Plan, as I will now show.

The FDA and AMA would like you to believe there is “no scientific evidence” that natural substances are useful in treating cancer. That in spite of the fact that pharmaceutical companies routinely use natural substances to inspire the design of their synthetic toxins. A casual reading of this page will demonstrate that natural substances are the preferred way of treating cancer. It makes one wonder why the National Institutes of Health have ignored Mother Nature (of course we know why they have been ignoring scientific evidence).

Even cell lines over 100 times more resistant to conventional chemotherapy drugs were considerably sensitive to Alzium.”

* Arginine / L-Arginine (amino acid)
“A positive study conducted by a team of German researchers showed that arginine contributed significantly to immune function by increasing levels of white blood cells. Scottish scientists added that dietary supplementation with arginine in breast cancer patients enhanced NK cell activity and lymphokine cytotoxicity (Brittenden et al. 1994). (Lymphokines are chemical factors produced and released by T-lymphocytes that attract macrophages to a site of infection or inflammation in preparation for attack.) Various researchers have shown that increasing arginine increases neutrophils (white blood cells that remove bacteria, cellular debris, and solid particles), significantly upgrading host defense (Muhling et al. 2002). Apart from enhancing immune function, arginine increases a number of amino acids, creating the possibility of an amino acid imbalance. Oversupplying some amino acids while undersupplying others is thought to destabilize the tumor. All cells, both healthy and diseased, have amino acid requirements; if not met, the cell is significantly handicapped (Muhling et al. 2002). Amino acid manipulation has been applied in oncology for decades with varying degrees of success.”

A general category referring to natural medicine practiced in India. “Ayurveda, literally, “the science of life,” is the ancient Indian art and science of healing and rejuvenation through the use of natural herbs, roots and minerals.”

Beard Enzyme Therapy
This treatment led to Metabolic therapy. “The Scottish embryologist, Dr. John Beard, proposed in 1906 that the pancreatic proteolytic enzymes represent the body’s main defense against cancer, and would be useful as a cancer treatment. Particularly during the first two decades of twentieth century, Dr. Beard’s thesis attracted some attention in academic circles, and several case reports in the medical literature documented tumor regression and even remission in terminal cancer patients treated with pancreatic enzymes. In 1911, Dr. Beard published a monograph entitled The Enzyme Therapy of Cancer, which summarized his therapy and the supporting evidence.”

* Bee Pollen
“Do not give honey or any other bee food to an infant under one year of age. Honey contains dangerous spores that an infant’s immature immune system cannot fight. These spores are not a problem for the immune systems of older, healthy children and adults.” “In his summary, Dr Robinson reveals the incredible results: “In the mice not given bee pollen, mammary tumors appeared at an average of 31.3 weeks. Tumor incidence was 100% and they all died”. “The average onset of tumors of the mice given bee pollen was 41.1 weeks… around 30% later in time”. “Seven mice in the bee pollen group had still not developed a tumor at 62 weeks of age when the tests were terminated”.
Dr Robinson concluded that bee pollen contains an anti carcinogenic principle that could be added to food.”

* Bee Propolis
“The latest FDA-approved drug for fighting colon cancer [Celecoxib] may be sitting in your kitchen. Rosemary, turmeric, grapes, a honey bee product called propolis: These all contain chemicals similar to a drug used to prevent the growth of cancerous cells in the large intestine; they work much in the same way.” It is interesting that the FDA approved the drug, but not the natural substances that contained a natural version of the synthetic drug. Bee Venom
“Melittin is the main active component of bee venom. Percentage level of its contents in bee venom is 50-60%. Melittin provides very strong anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effect. Scienticts at Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of Molecular Science use melittin to develop cancer treatments that should have fewer side effects than other drugs used to fight the disease.”

* Beet Juice (Kills cancer cells)
A common addition to vegetable juices used to treat cancer. “Beet juice is used in Europe for the treatment of cancer,” says Eleonaore Blaurock-Busch, Ph.D., president of Trace Minerals International in Boulder, Colorado. The crimson-like pigment in beets, betacyanin, is the compound believed to have the anti-cancer properties. Compared to other juices used in studies, beet juice ranked close to the top in preventing cell mutations that commonly lead to cancer. Beets are also high in folate, which is a pregnant woman’s favorite mineral for prevention of birth defects.” “Never drink beet juice by itself. Beet juice should always be mixed with other vegetables and/or apple juice. He observed regression of the tumors, increases in weight and improvement in the general condition of his patients.” “Dr. Ferenczi’s clinical report included methods of administering the beets and several very important case studies: ‘I diagnosed a man of 50 years of age, with a lung tumour. And subsequently confirmed in a Budapest hospital and also in a country hospital, which corresponded clinically to lung cancer. I started treatment with beetroot in the described manner. After 6 weeks of treatment the tumor had disappeared … after 4 months of treatment he gained 10 kg. In weight, the erythrocyte [mature red blood cell] sediment rate [e.s.r] was reduced drastically. “Bitter Melon stimulates the release of insulin and blocks the formation of glucose in the bloodstream, which may be helpful in the treatment of diabetes, psoriasis, cancer, infections, and pain from neurological complications, and may delay the onset of cataracts or retinopathy and inhibit the AIDS virus.” There has not been a lot of scientific work on Bitter Melon, so its exact benefit for cancer patients is still unknown.

* Black Seed Oil / Black Cumin / Nigella Sativa (herb)
“These results confirmed earlier findings that Black seed has a positive stimulating effect on the immune system. These findings are of great practical significance since they indicate that a natural immune enhancer like the Black seed could play an important role in the treatment of cancer, AIDS, and other disease conditions associated with immune deficiency states.”

Boluses
“A bolus is like a suppository, used either vaginally or anally. Dr Schulze created a bolus of Squaw Vine herb, Slippery Elm Bark, Goldenseal root, Yellow Dock root, Comfrey root, Marshmallow root, Chickweed herb, Mullein leaf, Garlic bulb and Coconut and Tea Tree oil. Some boluses can be made into suppositories by mixing the materials and placing them into the freezer. These would be used for cervical problems.”

Bloodroot
Bloodroot is a key ingredient, along with zinc chloride, in almost all topical salves used in the treatment of skin cancer. For more than a hundred years, bloodroot has been successfully used to treat skin cancers. However, regardless of what some vendors claim, bloodroot should not be taken internally, not even in small doses. “Researchers have isolated the alkaloidal principle, sanguinarine, as the anticancer constituent. This alkaloid is also found in the far more abundant greater celandine, Chelidonium majus, an herb common along roadsides in Europe and elsewhere.” See also Cansema

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (Brain Cancer)
Orthodox – “If your tumour is a Glioma, you should investigate BNCT, – boron neutron capture therapy – a one-session radiotherapy treatment, with minimal side-effects, and improved survival to date. This promising technique is still in trials.”

Boswellic Acids
“Boswellic acids are the compounds isolated from the gum resin of Boswellia serrata and have been used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases for many years in the countries of the east. Recently, a few studies showed that the acids may have anti-cancer effect on leukemia and brain tumors. We investigated the apoptotic and anti-proliferative effects of two types of boswellic acids, keto-beta-boswellic acid and acetyl-keto-beta-boswellic acid, on liver cancer Hep G2 cells … The acids may be a promising drug for the chemo-prevention of liver cancer.”

Bovine Cartilage (the Good and the Bad)
“The first published clinical results of the effectiveness of bovine cartilage in the treatment of cancer appeared in 1985, after a successful five-year trial under FDA permit on 31 terminal patients who had been given the full possible spectrum of orthodox treatments and had failed to respond. The results were encouraging. “Of the 31 patients cited, 90 percent showed a partial or complete response. Eleven (35 percent) showed complete response with probable or possible cures, eight patients (26 per cent) had a complete response but sustained a relapse; six sustained a partial response. Of the 35 percent who showed complete response, nine lived on without any cancer activity and died of non-cancer related diseases or old age.” Although all types of cartilage are a rich source of the active ingredients for healing, the cartilage type appears to influence the chances of recovery. Research has shown that although shark cartilage contained 1000 times more of the active ingredients, their release from shark cartilage took 41 days in vitro. It would appear that this difficulty is the reason why such large amounts are necessary in the use of shark cartilage, whereas all the successful bovine results have been obtained using only 9 grams per day.” Having said all of that, the respected Minnesota Wellness folks question these studies: “This is much cheaper than Shark Cartilage and is being presently studied here in America with, ostensibly, very good results. However, the studies have been fudged, the success rate of 99% is highly inflated, and the people conducting these studies [I am not sure who he is talking about] seem to lack even quintessential ethics. Thus we cannot recommend bovine cartilage to anyone.”

** Brandt Grape Cure
Purple grapes, with their seeds and skin, contain more than a dozen nutrients known to kill cancer cells. They are especially effective when used in conjunction with a 12 hour fast. The Johanna Brandt Grape Cure should not be combined with any other alternative cancer treatment without carefully considering whether it will neutralize the grape cure.

This study identified castor oil as an anti-toxin, and as having impact on the lymphatic system, enhancing immunological function. The study found that castor oil pack therapy of a minimal two-hour duration produced an increase in the number of T-11 cells within a 24-hour period following treatment, with a concomitant increase in the number of total lymphocytes. This T-11 cell increase represents a general boost in the body’s specific defense status, since lymphocytes actively defend the health of the body by forming antibodies against pathogens and their toxins. T-cells identify and kill viruses, fungi, bacteria, and cancer cells.”

* Chaparral (herb, toxic – stay within dosages)
This herb has a long history of success in treating cancer. The FDA has shut it down as a treatment for cancer. Congress allows 400,000 Americans a year to die from tobacco related products, but the FDA doesn’t allow you to treat your cancer with chaparral.

* Cherries
“[Cherries] are a top source of perillyl alcohol, which kills cancer cells but spares healthy cells. In animal studies, this substance shrank pancreatic, breast, and liver tumors.”

Chicory Root
“Chicory root, a popular ingredient in herbal coffees, contains an anti-cancer carbohydrate known as inulin. Inulin prevented the formation of colon cancer tumors in several animal studies, according to a review published last year in the British Journal of Nutrition.”

* Clodronate
This treatment stops breast cancer from spreading to bone cancer. Not available in America. ” The Food and Drug Administration’s suppression of clodronate may have caused the premature or needless death of about 30,000 American women each year, based on the Aug. 6, 1998, New England Journal of Medicine study. Since clodronate could have been made available 15 years ago, about 517,000 American breast cancer victims were forced to suffer agonizing bone metastasis, and a total of 450,000 women probably died prematurely because the FDA aggressively denied this drug to cancer patients.” “In 1998, the New England Journal of Medicine published impressive data indicating that clodronate reduced the incidence and number of metastasis in bone and viscera (organs enclosed in the abdominal, thoracic, or pelvic cavity) in high-risk breast cancer patients by 50% (Diel et al. 1998; also see Journal Club on the Web).”

** Colloidal Silver
This is one of several colloidal mineral drinks that show promise for cancer treatments. “Naturopathic Medicine regards Cancer as a viral and fungal [candida septicemia] process. Microorganisms depend on a specific enzyme to breathe. Colloidal Silver is a catalyst that disables these enzymes, and as a result they die. To this day, there has been no recorded case of adverse effects from it when it is properly prepared. There also has been no recorded case of drug interaction with any other medication. Colonel Joe (Oxalic Acid)
The Colonel Joe protocol is headed by carrot juice. He claims it is the oxalic acid in the diet that kills the cancer cells. I personally wonder whether the success of this treatment is because of the beta carotene or the oxalic acid in carrots.

Colostrum
This is a product of a mother’s natural milk. ” Steven Rosenberg’s 1985 book, Quiet Strides in the War on Cancer, first popularized the benefits of cytokines in the treatment of cancer. Since then, the same cytokines found in colostrum (interleukins-1,-6 and -10, interferon gamma and lymphokines) have been the single most researched factors in cancer research. Lactalbumin, also found in colostrum, has been found to cause the selective death of cancer cells, leaving the surrounding noncancerous tissues unaffected. And finally, Lactoferrin has similarly been reported to possess anti-cancer activity. And, as in heart disease, if viruses are responsible for either the initiation or the spread of cancer, colostrum could be one additional way to prevent the disease.”

Comfrey plant (Symphytum officinale) (H. E. Kirschner, M.D.)
“Dr. Kirschner personally observed the powerful anticancer effects of comfrey on a patient of his who was dying from advanced, externalized cancer. He prescribed fresh, crushed-leaf comfrey poultices throughout the day. He writes that, “Much to the surprise of the patient and her family,” there was obvious healing within the first two days of treatment, with continued visible improvement over the next few weeks. “What is more,” he writes, “much of the dreadful pain that usually accompanies the advanced stages of cancer disappeared,” and there was a dramatic decrease in swelling.” The leaves should only be used EXTERNALLY. The medical community has greatly persecuted this plant. Their evidence is probably created by the misuse of the leaves.

Contortrostatin
“Contortrostatin is a disintegrin purified from southern copperhead snake venom. Disintegrins are small, disulfide-rich proteins containing an R/KGD (Arg/Lys-Gly-Asp) sequence at the tip of a flexible loop protruding from the main polypeptide chain. Integrins are a family of cell surface proteins found on many cell types that mediate interactions between cells, and between cells and their surroundings. Contortrostatin binds to integrins on the surface of cancer cells and inhibits tumor growth and metastasis. Contortrostatin is unique from all other disintegrins described to date in that it is a homodimer, which means it has two identical peptide chains held together by covalent disulfide bonds. We have been investigating the anti-tumor activity of contortrostatin using a breast cancer model. Our findings indicate that contortrostatin blocks several critical steps in tumor metastasis, and is, therefore, more potent than other agents which only block a single step. In addition, contortrostatin significantly inhibits invasion of breast cancer cells through an artificial barrier similar to the tissue surrounding blood vessels. This action was most likely due to the ability of contortrostatin to inhibit cell motility.”

* Copper
One of the colloidal minerals that has great potential for treating cancer. “In 1930, work in France indicated that injections of colloidal copper mobilized and expelled tumor tissue. Recent work with mice in the U.S. has shown that treatment of solid tumors with non-toxic doses of various organic complexes of copper markedly decreased tumor growth and metastasis and thus increased survival rate. These copper complexes did not kill cancer cells but caused them to revert to normal cells. Based on work in the treatment of cancers using copper complexes, researchers have found that these same complexes may prevent or retard the development of cancers in mice under conditions where cancers are expected to be induced.”

Coriolus Versicolor (Mushroom)
“PSK [Coriolus Versicolor] acts as an immuno-modulator and is used primarily in conjunction with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical treatments for cancer. Clinical studies have demonstrated significant results, results that would make headlines if obtained through conventional treatments: 30% vs. 10% disease-free survival for colon cancer patients over and eight-year clinical trial when PSK was used alone and tested against a placebo; 22% vs. 5% survival at five years for stage III lung cancer patients who were given radiation plus PSK as opposed to radiation alone; 81% vs. 64% survival at ten years for breast cancer patients who were given chemotherapy plus PSK as opposed to chemotherapy alone; 73% vs. 60% survival at five years for gastric cancer patients who combined daily PSK use with their chemotherapy as opposed to chemotherapy alone. This study, published in Lancet, found these results to be significant.” While PSK may have a profoundly higher survival rate than orthodox treatments, it is definitely not in the “top 50″ of alternative treatments as currently used.

C-Statin
“C-Statin is a group of proteoglycan molecules (PGM) isolated from Bindweed (Convulvulus arvensis,) a common garden weed. C-Statin is an anti-angiogenesis product. No toxicity has been noted at normal doses. Patients with cardiovascular disease should use caution and, as with cancer patients, only use this product with a physician’s supervision.”

Cranberry Juice
“Researchers at The University of Western Ontario have completed a study that suggests cranberry products could have cancer-fighting properties. The study, funded by Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc, documented that regular consumption of cranberry products may inhibit the development of breast cancer tumors in animals. Cranberries are a rich source of flavonoids, a variety of compounds produced by plants, that have been investigated for their anti-cancer activity.”

** Curcumin / Turmeric
“Imagine a natural substance so smart it can tell the difference between a cancer cell and a normal cell; so powerful it can stop chemicals in their tracks; and so strong it can enable DNA to walk away from lethal doses of radiation virtually unscathed. Curcumin has powers against cancer so beneficial that drug companies are rushing to make drug versions. Curcumin is all this and more. Curcuma longa is a ginger-like plant that grows in tropical regions. The roots contain a bright yellow substance (turmeric) that contains curcumin and other curcuminoids. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries. But it’s only within the past few years that the extraordinary actions of curcumin against cancer have been scientifically documented. Cytoluminescent Therapy (CLT)
“CLT is an advanced form of photodynamic therapy, which uses light
to fight cancer. Of course, light by itself cannot kill cancer cells. However, if patients are pre-treated with a drug called a sensitizer, and are then administered light of a certain wavelength, their cancer cells will die by the millions. This is because the energy of the beam of light sets off a “bomb” within the cell. The
“bomb” in this case is singlet oxygen, a kind of free radical. This process does not harm normal cells because the sensitizing drug accumulates only in cancer
and other abnormal tissues.

Dandelion Plant (herb – NOT just the root)
Yes, this is the plant that infests your yard. “Dandelion contains high levels of potassium, is a rich source of iron and vitamins, and, ounce for ounce, contains more carotene than carrots.” “Dandelion greens contain 7,000 units of Vitamin A per ounce. This is so high one author said it should make a carrot blush! It is important to realize that there is always a vitamin A deficiency in a person found to have cancer. The Chinese have used Dandelion for breast cancer for over a thousand years. Inulin, one of the major chemicals in Dandelion, is currently being studied extensively for its immuno-stimulatory functions. In testing it against cancer, it has been shown to be active against two tumor systems, by stimulating the actions of the white cells.” Actually, the list of cancer-fighting nutrients in dandelions is quite long. ” In l979, Japanese researchers found a dandelion extract – since then patented [I assume it was the extraction process that was patented] – which inhibits Erlich ascites cancer cells.”

* DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone)
“DHEA is a natural sterone produced by the adrenal gland. DHEA is the most common sterone in human blood, but amounts decline rapidly with age. Secretions are highest during the early twenties and begin to decline at around age 25, by the time we reach 70 years of age, DHEA production is only a small fraction of what it was 50 years earlier. Research has shown a correlation between low DHEA levels and a declining immune system, and DHEA is being used in the fight against HIV, cancer and senile dementia. It is also been clinically shown that DHEA helps brain neurons establish contact. Further, it is known that Alzheimer patients have low DHEA levels, when compared to their healthy counterparts. It is also known that a small amount of sulphate DHEA and micronized DHEA can convert into testosterone [which is a treatment for prostate cancer].”

Diethylstilbestrol (DES)
This drug is a synthetic hormone that was found to be in an alternative treatment for prostate cancer manufactured in China called PC-SPES. This drug was not supposed to be in the formula (along with two other manufactured drugs found in the formula). The DES can cause blood clots. Some doctors think the DES was the element of PC-SPES that made it work so well on advanced prostate cancer patients. One of the other manufactured drugs found in PC-SPES was a blood thinner. While PC-SPES has been removed from the market (I do not know if it is back on the market), doctors are now looking at DES as a treatment for advanced prostate cancer.

* D-Glucarate (phytonutrient)
“When a carcinogen known to induce intestinal cancer was given to rats, D-glucarate was shown to inhibit adenocarcinoma formation when given at the initiation stage. When administered after tumor development, D-glucarate significantly inhibited the size and metastatic potential of intestinal and colon cancers. The researchers made comments suggesting that D-glucurate may be effective in the prevention and treatment of cancer by inhibiting the beta-glucuronidase enzyme and by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation induced by chemical carcinogens.”

* DIM (diindolylmethane)
DIM is a phytochemical that is found in broccoli, cabbage, turnip and mustard greens, kale, brussel sprouts, collards, etc. “The first development in this research using chemically altered [sic] DIM from broccoli came when the growth of breast cancer cells was inhibited in laboratory studies. Subsequent research showed these compounds also inhibited growth of pancreatic, colon, bladder and ovarian cancer cells in culture, Safe said. Limited trials on lab mice and rats have produced the similar results, he noted.” “Researchers from the University of California at Berkeley looked at the effects of broccoli on human breast cancer cells. According to findings, compounds in broccoli known as indoles are digested and broken down in the stomach to a compound called 3,3′-diindolylmethane (DIM). This compound may be the key to keeping cancer at bay.”

* D-limonene
“Cancer prevention, inhibition, and regression are the most note worthy attributes of the MTs [Monoterpenes]. D-limonene (DL) and perillyl alcohol (POH) have been shown to be chemopreventive against mammary, liver, lung, UV-induced skin cancer and chemotherapeutic against both experimental mammary and pancreatic tumours. Perillyl alcohol stands out as effective against human pancreatic cancer, colon, liver to reduce vein graft intimal hyperplasia, as chemopreventive against colon carcinogenesis, prostate and lung cancer.”

* DMSO
Related to MSM, but yet it is different enough to put in its own category. “One of the most well known and exotic properties of this solvent is its ability to penetrate living tissue and transport other medicines in their integral state deep into the body.” “We’ve barely scratched the surface [of DMSO's capabilities], for this is a new principle in medicine. We’ve only had three new principles in our century – the antibiotic principle, the cortisone principle, and now the DMSO principle – and the DMSO principle is the only one of our generation. Despite all the controversy, my guess is that history will record it this way.” “At Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, Charlotte Friend MD has turned cancerous cells into harmless, normal ones in the test tube by putting them in touch with the DMSO solutions. DMSO is routinely used by alternative cancer clinics in Mexico to transport laetrile intravenously into the body. Because of extremely promising clinical results, research is still ongoing on a privately funded basis into DMSO’s potential role in the breaking up of tumors and the killing of metastatic cancer cells in its own right. Yet the United States Food & Drug Administration and the UK Medicines Control Agency continue to forbid the advertising and retailing of DMSO for any medicinal purposes save one: for the treatment of the rare urinary bladder condition, interstitial cystitis.”

Dries Cancer Diet
The most essential food in this diet is the pineapple, known to be a valuable cancer treatment food. “The Dries cancer diet is based largely upon the consumption of raw fruits, mostly tropical fruit such as pineapple and mango, as well as certain raw vegetables, seeds and condiments such as yoghurt, buttermilk and some oils. The basis of the selection of these foods is their bio-energetic value measured in bio photons, which apparently have an effect upon resistance to cancer.” See the book: The Dries Cancer Diet: A Practical Guide to the Use of Fresh Fruit and Raw Vegetables in the Treatment of Cancer. “Based on the author’s research with over 300 cancer patients, this book explains the relationship between food, cancer and environmental factors.”

* Echinacea (herb)
“Echinacea stimulates the white blood cells that help fight infections in the body. Research has shown that echinacea enhances the activity of a particular type of white blood cells-macrophages. A particular glycoprotein in echinacea was found to significantly increase the killing effect of macrophages on tumor cells. A number of studies have found that echinacea boosts the body’s ability to fight Listeria, a bacterium that causes a deadly form of food poisoning, and Candida yeast.” Echinacea is actually a family of herbs.

** Ellagic Acid
“Ellagic acid is a naturally occurring phytonutrient, chemically belonging to the phenol compound. It is a phenolic lactone compound found in a variety of fruits and vegetables. It occurs in particularly high concentrations in strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, grapes and many other berries, and in nuts such as walnuts and pecans (Daniel, E.M. et al., 1989). It is present in plants in the form of hydrozable tannins called ellagitannins. Ellagitannins are esters of glucose with hexahydroxydiphenic acid; when hydrolyzed, they yield ellagic acid in numerous plants such as those mentioned above.”

Emanuel Revici (biologically guided chemotherapy)
“Emanuel Revici, MD, treated many forms of cancer with great success for 40 years at his clinic in NY. The core of his therapy was a form of selenium. He was driven out of practice by the New York Medical Board.”

Escharotics
A category of cancer salves used to treat external cancers. Several different herbs, and several different combinations of herbs and other ingredients have a highly successful history of treating skin cancer.

** Essiac Tea
One of the absolutely most successful and most used of all alternative cancer treatments is an herbal product consisting of from 4 to 8 herbs, depending on who you ask. Rene Caisse was persecuted in Canada for curing cancer patients.

* Exercise With Oxygen Therapy (EWOT)
An excellent and safe way to get massive amounts of oxygen into your bloodstream. In a nutshell, you breathe an oxygen mixture while you walk on a treadmill. There is a book on the subject: Stop Aging or Slow the Process, How Exercise With Oxygen Therapy (EWOT) Can Help, by William Campbell Douglass. Oxygen, of course, is the archenemy of cancer cells. There are dozens of different oxygen therapies in the alternative camp.

Falk Supplementation Schedule
This is a detailed supplement schedule that includes Vitamin C, niacinamide, Vitamin E, B-Complex, etc. While there are no statistics that I know of for this treatment plan it appears to be a supercharged Hoffman plan. Its cure rate would clearly outperform orthodox treatments (as Hoffman’s did and as the weaker Pauling/Cameron plan did), but does not appear strong enough to be a stand-alone plan. Rather, it would be wise to have a base alternative treatment plan (e.g. laetrile), and then add the Falk supplements to the base plan. Fruitarian Diet
As with the Raw Food diet, there is no universally agreed upon “Fruitarian Diet” for cancer. Rather, it is a diet based on fruits, nuts, seeds and berries (which are fruits). A diet based on a random selection of these items would be a weak cancer diet. However, this would be an excellent cancer diet on three conditions. First, eat only the fruits, nuts, seeds and berries which are known to treat cancer. Second, drink the juice of some of the key vegetables that treat cancer (e.g. carrots, cabbage, beatroot). Third, eat and drink nothing not just mentioned. See also the Raw Food diet.

Fulvic Acid
There are mixed reviews. Waiting for more information from the alternative camp who are not vendors.

Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) (Borage oil)
GLA is a “good” omega 6 fatty acid. ” In one study, terminally ill patients suffering from pancreatic cancer tripled their life expectancy after taking extensive doses of GLA. It is also believed that tumor growth and metastasis can be quelled with GLA-especially in melanoma and colon or breast cancer.”

* GEIPE Cancer Therapy
GEIPE is a direct current technology that has been around for awhile, but has not been pursued because it cannot be patented (e.g. it has no massive profit potential). It is concerned ONLY with shrinking tumors. “In the 1985 study, gentle electrotherapy was shown to consistently and progressively reduce the tumor mass. Five one-hour treatments over 5 days at 2.4 milli-ampere resulted in 98% reduction. 98% is not that far from 100%, or cure. Genistein
“Cancer patients whose cancer cells have intact functional p53 oncogene should *not* use genistein. Cancer cells that lack the p53 oncogene or have a mutated p53 oncogene have been shown to respond well to genistein. Only a pathological examination of cancer cells can determine the p53 status.”

Geraniol
“We show that geraniol, a monoterpene found in essential oils of fruits and herbs caused inhibition of Caco-2 cells growth and blocked cancer cell differentiation. Geraniol at 400 ìM prevented the formation of brush-border membranes and inhibited the expression of intestinal hydrolases (sucrase, lactase, alkaline phosphatase). When combined with geraniol (400 ìM), the antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects of 5-FU (5 ìM) were increased by 2-fold.”

* Germanium-132
“These T and B lymphocytes, macrophages and natural killer cells devour foreign cells and defend the body against viruses and cancer. However, none of these cells can function properly if the person is deficient in interferon, a protein which blocks viruses from infecting cells. Germanium appears to significantly enhance the body’s production of interferon. At the annual meeting of the Japan Cancer Association II in 1979, proceedings showed that germanium was a significant interferon-inducing agent. Studies published in the 1984 Journals of Interferon Research 4 confirmed these results.”

Gerson Therapy
Max Gerson was a doctor who created many types of pastes and products to treat cancer. There is currently a clinic that uses the Gerson Therapy. His book is called: A Cancer Therapy.

Ginger Root
“Researchers at the University of Minnesota determined that mice fed the main active component in ginger root three times a week had slower rates of cancer growth than control animals did.”

Glandulars
“A study involving calf thymus extract, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, is perhaps the most notable among glandular studies because it is the first controlled U.S. study to test glandulars on humans. Seventeen patients suffering from rare but fatal lymphocytic abnormalities involving tumorous growths and organ lesions (Letterer-Siwe disease, Hand-Schüller-Christian disease and eosinophilic granuloma) were injected daily with thymus peptide extract. A control group of 20 people underwent chemotherapy, the normal treatment for these diseases. Ten of the 17 patients who responded to thymic extract experienced full remission after one year. Seven of the 17 showed either no change or clinical worsening after 28 days and therapy was discontinued. This remission rate was statistically comparable to previous study controls who were treated with chemotherapy.” I might add – without the side-affects!

** Glyconutrients
“Glyconutrients are a new and more specialized type of nutraceutical. They support the process our individual tissue cells use to recognize, and communicate with, each other. The work that Dr. Blobel [1999 Nobel Prize] and many others have done let us understand the importance of good cell communication to ensure good health. The discovery of Glyconutrients and their role in human health is now in Mainstream Medicine.” The potential for using glyconutrients in alternative cancer treatments is enormous.

Glyconutrients are actually 8 specific monosaccharides. One of these 8 glyconutrients has 4 different forms. Of these 4 forms, one is the most important: the extremely rare long-chain acemannan, found mainly in aloe vera. At least 6 people (at last count) have been arrested, jailed or harassed by U.S. and Canadian authorities in an attempt to keep this molecule out of your home. A product called Albarin had a 94% cure rate of hospice cancer patients. The owner was arrested. I know of only one product that currently has this molecule: Aloe Immune. See my Stage IV cancer article for more information.

* Grains – Whole Grains
“Whole grains like oats, wheat, rye, millet and others contain fiber that helps isolate cancer causing compounds and removes them from the body. Flaxseed, rye and millet are rich in lignans which act as weak estrogens helping stymie the growth of breast cancer and other malignancies that are often estrogen dependent. The more whole grains you eat, the lower your odds of death, a University of Minnesota study suggests. Middle-aged women who ate slightly more than one whole-grain food per day had a 15% lower death rate than women eating lots of refined processed grains. That calls for more whole-grain dark bread and cereals such as All Bran and “old-fashioned” oatmeal. Whole grains contain anti-cancer agents and help stabilize blood sugar and insulin, which may promote longevity.”

* Grape Seed Extract + Grape Skin Extract
Supplements that contain several cancer killing nutrients, such as resveratrol and OPCs. See Brandt Grape Cure.

** Graviola Tree / Brazilian Paw Paw
There is fairly reliable evidence that a pharmaceutical company sat on this product for several years trying to synthesize one of its nutrients. In any case, there is very good scientific evidence from studies that this product is for real, if the quality of the manufacturing is good.

** Hulda Clark Therapies
Dr. Clark has written several books on health subjects. She has a loyal following and there are a lot of testimonials about her on the internet. Her treatments include a number of herbs and nutrients. I do not doubt her treatments work well. Perhaps the most extreme of her treatments has to do with fixing a patient’s teeth and eliminating dental amalgam (mercury) and root canals (perpetual infections). While these things need to be dealt with, it personally seems extreme to me as part of a treatment plan (to me they belong in the long term prevention category).

* Hydrazine Sulfate
Hydrazine sulfate is another one of those treatments that has been persecuted by orthodox medicine. It is cheap to buy and more effective than orthodox treatments. It is not one of the best alternative treatments, but it is close to being in the “top 50″ in my opinion.

It is this hypoglycemic condition that changes the environment, in the body, to one in which cancer cells cannot survive.”

Insulin Potentiation Therapy or Insulin Primed Potentiation Therapy (IPT) (Dr. Donato Perez Garcia)
This is a therapy that uses purely orthodox substances (since orthodox medicine doesn’t use it, many people consider it an alternative treatment) that is far superior to other orthodox methods. It has far less side-effects because it uses far less chemotherapy. It targets cancer cells better than other orthodox treatments. Unfortunately, it is not as profitable as other treatments so it is ignored by orthodox medicine. The reason I do not push this treatment is that a person needs to go into an insulin coma before it is administered. I question the safety of doing this, and wonder why it is necessary.

* Ionized / Alkaline Water
Ionized water inhibits the spread of cancer and aids in killing cancer cells, directly or indirectly. However, there is not enough evidence to categorize it as a stand-alone treatment plan.

This is one of the most successful treatment plans ever, with a 93% cure rate on 33,000 patients, most of whom were declared terminal before they went to Kelley. However, because it is metabolic oriented, it can take several months to become fully effective. Kelley did not count in his statistics those who died within 12-18 months of first seeing him (I don’t know how many people fit into this category). The program can be found in the book: Cancer: Curing the Incurable Without Surgery, Chemotherapy or Radiation, by William Donald Kelley. Kelley was mercilessly persecuted by orthodox medicine and his treatment had to move to Mexico.

Licorice root contains both the isoflavone Licochalcone-A and triterpenoid saponin. Regarding Licochalcone-A, in a scientific study: “Cells from patients with leukemia, breast and prostate cancer that were grown in cultures in the lab, he says, were killed when he added enough of the extract.” Regarding triterpenoids, in a study: “They may block the production of prostaglandin – a hormone-like fatty acid that may be responsible for stimulating the growth of cancer cells – and help get rid of cancer-causing invaders. Triterpenoids have been shown in test tubes to stunt the growth of rapidly multiplying cells, like cancer cells, and they may even help precancerous cells return to normal.” As if that weren’t enough: “Medical researchers have isolated several active substances in licorice root including glycosides, flavonoids, asparagine, isoflavonoids, chalcones and coumarins. Primary of these is Glycyrrhetinic acid.” Licorice root is toxic, so much work need to be done on this herb.

Since malaria is a parasite, this plant could give credibility to the theory of some that cancer is caused by a parasite.

Yet another heavily FDA suppressed treatment. “The term medical marijuana took on dramatic new meaning last February, when researchers in Madrid announced they had destroyed incurable brain cancer tumors in rats by injecting them with THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. Most Americans don’t know anything about the Madrid discovery. Virtually no U.S. newspapers carried the story, which ran only once on the AP and UPI news wires, on Feb. 29. The ominous part: This isn’t the first time scientists have discovered that THC shrinks tumors. In 1974, researchers at the Medical College of Virginia had been funded by the National Institutes of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system. The government quickly shut down the Virginia study and all further cannabis/tumor research, according to Jack Herer, who reports on the events in his book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes. Thalidomide
An orthodox treatment that has had excellent results treating advanced cancer patients. “Thalidomide slows the progression of prostate cancer, but has serious side effects.” The FDA has teamed up with the vendor of this product (or should I say the vendor has hired the FDA?) to make it very difficult to obtain this medicine. Whether this is because it is too cheap of a cure (it is very expensive by the way) or because of its side-effects, I do not know. But it has been around for many years and still does not have a generic.

Theanine (amino acid)
This is an amino acid in green tea. “The IDA [idarubicin (IDA)-induced antitumor activity and toxicity] concentration in the tumors in the theanine plus IDA group increased to twice the level in the IDA alone group. Furthermore, the decrease in tumor weight caused by IDA at 1.0 mg/kg per day x4 days (at this dose IDA exhibits antitumor activity) was significantly amplified by theanine. The numbers of leukocyte and bone marrow cells decreased significantly on IDA injection. Theanine significantly reversed these changes.”

Tocotrienol Complex (a class of Vitamin E compounds)
“It is encouraging to know that the in vitro tests that document the anti-cancer effects of tamoxifen also show tocotrienols to have similar cell inhibitory properties. Compared to tamoxifen, however, tocotrienols are safe. Human studies have shown that daily doses of up to 240 mg of tocotrienols for 16 months produce no adverse effects. Further studies will determine whether humans who saturate their breast adipose tissue with tocotrienol from supplements will achieve a reduced incidence of breast cancer. (Please note that it is the palm-oil tocotrienols, and not rice-bran tocotrienols, that have primarily demonstrated these anti-cancer effects.)”
