The Four Enemies of Spiritual Life.
The Srimad-Bhagavatam explains that a peaceful, spiritually progressive culture rests on four pillars-austerity, truthfulness, cleanliness and mercy. These four qualities indicate a state of goodness conducive to spiritual aspiration. Unfortunately, the characteristic of this Kali-yuga is that men become inclined toward four basic sinful activities that break these four pillars of religiosity, leading men into the darkness of passion and ignorance. These four degrading activities, which cause humanity in this age to fall from the spiritual path into frustrated materialism, are gambling, intoxicating habits, illicit sex, and animal slaughter and eating of animal foodstuffs (meat, fish and eggs).

Vroeger, in de oude tijden zei men tegen de kandidaten: 'Bereid u voor, u zult verschrikkelijke proeven moeten ondergaan.”
Waarom zegt men dat degenen met de
grootste mogelijkheden op het gebied van yoga meestal ook de grootste
moeilijkheden hebben?
Waarom dat zo is? Omdat men om grote
mogelijkheden op het pad van yoga te hebben een sterk en veelzijdig
karakter moet bezitten, met grote innerlijke capaciteiten, en omdat
het de sterke karakters zijn die met de grootste moeilijkheden af te
rekenen krijgen. Onopvallende, grauwe karakters gaan in het algemeen
hun gangetje zonder lastig te worden gevallen. Ze zijn dan ook tot
niet veel in staat. Hun pad is erg nauw en kort, en ze komen snel aan
het eind ervan. Hun mogelijkheden zijn beperkt. Maar de mensen met
een sterk karakter ondervinden grote moeilijkheden. Het is in deze
wereld immers onmogelijk geen moeilijkheden te hebben. Zolang de
wereld blijft zoals ze is en men eraan deel heeft, deelt men ook in
haar moeilijkheden.
Slechts door onophoudelijke inspanning kan men
erin slagen de eigen moeilijkheden te overwinnen, maar ook dan blijkt
het onmogelijk de saamhorigheid met de rest van de wereld te
verbreken. Een volmaakt gave zuiverheid, een volkomen perfectie
blijken bijgevolg onmogelijk zolang de wereld geen bepaalde graad van
volmaaktheid heeft bereikt. Zelfs de asceet, die in een grot gaat
zitten, of onder een boom in de jungle, kan zich niet helemaal
ontdoen van die saamhorigheid met de rest van de wereld. De lucht die
hij inademt is vervult van de vibraties van de wereld; het voedsel
dat hij inneemt, wat het ook moge zijn, zelfs als hij het tot een
minimum beperkt, bevat de vibraties van de wereld; het is dus
voldoende dat hij bestaat om in saamhorigheid te verkeren met de
moeilijkheden van de wereld.
Dat is trouwens waarom de weg zo lang
is. Zelfs zonder er iets anders bij te betrekken dan wat men
onophoudelijk in zich opneemt door te ademen en zich te voeden, moet
men dat allemaal voortdurend transformeren in zoverre men het
binnenkrijgt. Het is een onophoudelijke alchimie waarbij men een
bepaald soort vibraties absorbeert dat alle mogelijke vormen van
wanordelijkheid inhoudt, en wat men vervolgens dient te transmuteren
in iets wat klaar is om het hogere licht te ontvangen. Die die arbeid
is constant, hij moet constant worden uitgevoerd. Dus is het
onmogelijk in deze wereld te bestaan, in de wereld zoals ze is, en
volmaakt te worden zonder dat de wereld er zelf aanzienlijk op
vooruit is gegaan.

Why is it said that those with the greatest potential in yoga usually also have the greatest difficulties? Why is that so? Because to have great potential on the path of yoga one must possess a strong and versatile character, with great inner capabilities, and because it is the strong characters who face the greatest difficulties. Unobtrusive, gray characters generally go about their business without being bothered. They are therefore not capable of much. Their path is very narrow and short, and they soon come to the end of it. Their options are limited. But the people of strong character encounter great difficulties. After all, it is impossible in this world not to have difficulties. As long as the world remains as it is and one participates in it, one also shares in its difficulties. Only through ceaseless effort can one succeed in overcoming one's own difficulties, but even then it proves impossible to break solidarity with the rest of the world. Perfect purity and complete perfection therefore prove impossible as long as the world has not reached a certain degree of perfection. Even the ascetic who sits in a cave or under a tree in the jungle cannot completely rid himself of that solidarity with the rest of the world. The air he breathes is filled with the vibrations of the world; the food he takes, whatever it may be, even if he reduces it to a minimum, contains the vibrations of the world; it is therefore sufficient that he exists in order to be in communion with the difficulties of the world. By the way, that's why the road is so long. Even without involving anything other than what one continuously takes in through breathing and feeding, one must continually transform all of that insofar as one ingests it. It is a ceaseless alchemy in which one absorbs a certain type of vibration that contains all possible forms of disorder, and then transmutes it into something ready to receive the higher light. That work is constant, it must be performed constantly. So it is impossible to exist in this world, in the world as it is, and become perfect without the world itself having improved considerably. He followed his internal guidance despite it going against strong social and cultural rules. He is a master you can call on when your inner guidance asks you to be courageous and go against the norm.

Wisdom of today.
If your faith grows stronger day by day, you will certainly progress in your sadhana and there can be no setback. A break from certain experiences can only mean a period of processing, during which you prepare for a new set of experiences. Stay open and keep striving.
Those who fall into madness have lost the true touch and have fallen into wrong contact. This is due either to a certain impurity and unspiritual desire with which the seeker begins the path, or to a certain insincerity, egoism and wrong attitude, or to a weakness in the brain or nervous system that the Force that has called it down , cannot tolerate.
The safest way is to follow the guidance of one who has himself achieved mastery in the way. But this guidance must be followed unconditionally and sincerely; you must not allow your own mental being and its ideas and whims to interfere. It goes without saying that it must be true guidance, not the guidance of a novice or of an impostor.

The only work that purifies spiritually is the work done without personal motives, without desire for fame or public recognition or worldly greatness, without clinging to one's own mental motives or vital desires and demands or physical preferences, without vanity or grossness, presumption or claim to position or authority, made solely for the sake of the Divine and at the command of the Divine. Any work done in an egoistic mind, however good it may be for people in the world of Ignorance, is of no use to the seeker of yoga.
