Suffering for the living dead, for people who do not know esoteric knowledge and wisdom, is part of the path of the bodhisattva. Dhyana is the ultimate stage on this earth, unless one fully becomes a mahatma. As already stated, in this state the rajayogi is still spiritually aware of the self and of the operation of his higher principles. One step further, and he finds himself in the realm above the seventh (or, according to some schools, the fourth). After practicing pratyahara—a preparatory training to control the intellect and thoughts—these schools mention dharana, dhyana, and samadhi, and summarize these three under the general name samyama. From the bud of self-denial springs the sweet fruit of ultimate liberation.
Pratyahara literally means the withdrawal or control of the senses. It is the fifth step on the eightfold path of yoga according to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. You turn your attention inward and shut yourself off from external stimuli from the outside world.
