Staying connected to the Sahaja Samadhi state (the "natural," effortless state of abiding in enlightenment while engaging in daily life) involves transitioning from formal meditation to a continuous, non-dual awareness. It is not about maintaining a temporary state, but realizing that the Self is already established in that state permanently.
Here are the key methods to abide in Sahaja Samadhi:
1. Shift from Doing to Being
- Stop Effort: Sahaja means "natural." If you are trying to be in Samadhi, you are not in Sahaja. It is an effortless state where you stop acting as the "doer".
- Effortless Meditation: Move from "doing" meditation to "resting in what is". The goal is to make the meditative state a habitual, 24/7 reality rather than a scheduled activity.
- Do Not Seek Experiences: The urge to have visions or blissful states is a barrier. Shift your focus from having a spiritual experience to simply being.
2. Practice Self-Inquiry (Ramana Maharshi)
- Return to the Source: When the mind is pulled into the world, ask "Who am I?" or "Who is having this thought?".
- Locate the Witness: Focus your attention on the "I"-thought, the observer or witness, rather than the objects being observed.
- The Heart Center: According to teachings, bringing attention back to the heart center helps maintain this state of silence.
3. Cultivate Witness Consciousness (Sakshi Bhava)
- View Life as a Spectator: Engage in your daily duties—work, talk, walk—but internally remain the silent witness, observing actions without attachment, like a "sleeping passenger" in your own body.
- Allow, Don't Resist: When habitual thoughts or emotions (vasanas) arise, do not fight them. Allow them to exist without labeling them "good" or "bad." Without your energy, they pass quickly.
- Observe Without Judgment: Maintain a state of pure awareness, which acts as a mirror reflecting all experiences without being stained by them.
4. Non-Forgetfulness
- Continuous Remembrance: The only "practice" after true realization is simply not forgetting your true nature as pure consciousness.
- Immediate Return: Whenever you notice you have been pulled into ego-identity or a "story," immediately, without guilt, bring your awareness back to the present moment and the inner silence.
5. Utilize Supportive Practices
- Satsang: Spending time in the presence of realized masters or other seekers helps sustain the vibration of silence.
- Meditation as Rest: While not necessary to enter the state, daily, quiet meditation helps the body and nervous system integrate this high-voltage, quiet state of existence.
Characteristics of Sahaja Samadhi:
- It is not a trance, but full alertness while working.
- Total destruction of the ego-mind; it never sprouts again.
- Inner silence accompanied by the capability to act in the world.
