The ability to be insulted without retaliation creates peace in all sorts of human interactions. For example, about twenty years ago after presenting some peace proposals at a school board meeting, the author was bitterly and personally attacked by a religious anti-peace group for "being a meditator, and for promoting peace in the schools". After the meeting, he wrote a letter to one of the people who had attacked him, making it clear that the only way he could deal with the nature of her attack was to forgive her completely. She responded beautifully, and we were able to establish a friendly and respectful dialogue. This reinforced the meaning of the words of Jesus, "Love thy enemies."
