The use of drugs and alcohol (not including moderate use of ceremonial wine or grape juice), which alter consciousness and are often part of the left-hand path are antithetical to the Torah Way. The warning in the previous parashah to keep away from these things "so that they shall not die as a result of their impurities", is an invitation to do teshuva and change one's ways.
I have not heard of anyone in any enlightenment tradition who has become truly enlightened on the left-hand path. On the contrary, those who have tried have either were damaged or died (blocked from liberation, or literally died) along the way.
