Two years ago, Melissa Lucio was almost murdered by the state of Texas. In a shocking move two days before her scheduled execution, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals issued a stay on her execution.
Now two years later, new exculpatory evidence has been discovered that was hidden by the prosecution in order to secure the conviction and ultimate death sentence against Melissa. This evidence shows what Melissa has been saying for decades - that the tragic death of her young daughter was a terrible accident. Thankfully this evidence came to light before she was executed (countless other innocent people sentenced to death have not been so lucky).
It seems many people in positions of power are finally getting on board with the fact that Melissa was sentenced to death for a crime that never happened. I hope her conviction is overturned and she is released very soon and I also hope the publicity her case has gotten will help to educate the uniformed about the reality of wrongful convictions and why we need to abolish the death penalty. It is just tragedy compounded on tragedy and solves nothing and we risk killing a person for a crime they did not commit or, as in Melissa’s case, for a crime that never happened.
