NEIL HAGUE : The police cannot act like the criminals they arrest or society is over. They have every right to defend themselves from being attacked, but once the threat is dealt with there is no justification for kicking someone in the head as they lie on the ground and you are pointing a taser at them It may be hard sometimes, but if the police don’t hold themselves to a higher standard than those they arrest we walk an increasingly dark road in which ultimately anything goes. We certainly saw that during the ‘Covid’ protests when some police officers were brutal against perfectly peaceful people. If those who attacked the police here are not also held to account then that’s another dark road in which ultimately anything goes. Justice must dispense justice irrespective of colour, creed and background.
