Hurting a bodhisattva causes extremely heavy negative karma, potentially destroying vast amounts of positive potential built over eons. Because a bodhisattva is dedicated to the benefit of all beings, harming them is considered a serious obstruction to one's own enlightenment and results in severe future suffering or rebirth in lower realms.
