Message from Michael Beckwith (Agape Community).

I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Holy Bible, Psalm 16:8

As human beings, our inclination is to have a dependence upon something or someone. We are always forging some sort of relationship in our daily lives. Why not choose a dependence upon something that sets us free and empowers us to live a life of pure joy and delight?

Some dependencies may be unhealthy in nature. We may find ourselves turning to an array of destructive substances or behaviors to find instant relief from emotions or circumstances we do not want to face. Initially these substances or behaviors may bring instant gratification, but ultimately, they stop working and we are left with the emotion intensified or the avoidant circumstance worse. We are rendered even more dependent because we crave that fleeting euphoria from pain and suffering.

Also, we may create a codependent relationship with someone else because we want to fulfill ourselves by taking care of them. We pour forth all our love and concern upon someone else, all the while neglecting our own needs. We put others first and our self-care is forgotten. Before we know it, we end up feeling empty inside and resentful because we have sacrificed our well-being, thinking that this will fulfill us. By trying to fix someone else, we are left broken and in despair.

Our true independence comes from a dependence upon God. We are reminded to put God first rather than substances or other people. When we seek God by creating a powerful and consistent spiritual practice, we create a relationship with an infinite power and unconditional love to cleanse and purify our minds, hearts, and souls. With God, we can face any emotion or situation head on without trying to avoid it. By creating a dependence upon God, we are empowered to face what we are here to face and we are set free.

Affirmation:
I place my dependence upon God by creating a spiritual practice of prayer and meditation. My dependence upon God is my independence, power, and strength. In God, I am free.
