Dit streven kent geen verlies noch vermindering en een kleine vooruitgang op dit pad kan iemand voor het grootste gevaar behoeden.
Betekenisverklaring
Actief zijn in Kṛṣṇa-bewustzijn of druk bezig zijn voor het plezier van Kṛṣṇa zonder er enige zinsbevrediging voor terug te verwachten, is activiteit van de hoogste transcendentale kwaliteit. Wie zelfs maar een klein begin maakt met zulke activiteit, zal geen belemmering tegenkomen en dat kleine begin kan nooit verloren gaan. Op het materiële vlak moeten alle activiteiten die eenmaal begonnen zijn, worden afgemaakt, anders lopen ze op niets uit. Maar in Kṛṣṇa-bewustzijn heeft elke activiteit waaraan men begint een blijvend effect, ook al is ze onvoltooid. Wie zulke activiteiten verricht, verliest dus niets, ook al is zijn activiteit in Kṛṣṇa-bewustzijn onvolledig. Als men één procent heeft gedaan in Kṛṣṇa-bewustzijn, dan heeft dat een blijvend effect, zodat het volgende begin vanaf twee procent zal zijn, maar bij materiële activiteiten is er geen sprake van winst als ze niet voor honderd procent voltooid worden. Ajāmila had zijn plicht voor een bepaald percentage in Kṛṣṇa-bewustzijn volbracht, maar door de genade van de Heer was zijn eindresultaat honderd procent. In verband hiermee is er een mooi vers in het Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (1.5.17):
tyaktvā sva-dharmaṁ caraṇāmbujaṁ harer
bhajann apakvo ’tha patet tato yadi
yatra kva vābhadram abhūd amuṣya kiṁ
ko vārtha āpto ’bhajatāṁ sva-dharmataḥ

‘Als iemand zijn voorgeschreven activiteiten opgeeft en handelt in Kṛṣṇa-bewust-zijn, maar dan ten val komt doordat hij zijn werk niet voltooid heeft, wat heeft hij dan verloren? En wat wint men als men zijn materiële werkzaamheden perfect uitvoert?’ Of zoals de christenen zeggen: ‘Wat baat het de mens zo hij de hele wereld wint, maar schade lijdt aan zijn eeuwige ziel?’
Materiële activiteiten en hun resultaten eindigen samen met het lichaam. Maar activiteiten in Kṛṣṇa-bewustzijn brengen iemand opnieuw tot Kṛṣṇa-bewustzijn, zelfs na het verlies van het lichaam. In ieder geval is het zeker dat men een goede kans heeft om in een volgend leven als mens geboren te worden. Zo’n geboorte kan plaatsvinden in een familie van zeer beschaafde brāhmaṇa’s of in een rijke aristocratische familie en geeft iemand de kans om verder vooruitgang te maken. Dat is de unieke aard van activiteiten in Kṛṣṇa-bewustzijn.
